If you’re remotely familiar with search engine optimisation (SEO) you will know that page load speeds have always been a weighted variable when it comes to ranking on the SERP’s. So you’re probably going to want to make yourself familiar with the Google Speed Update 2018.
How quickly a website loads is not only important to Google but also to your users. Nobody wants to wait around forever, reminiscing over dial-up internet days long past. Although, if you’re dealing with Perth’s internet you may well be dealing with those days still.
So what’s happening with this update?
What is happening
Google announced the “Speed Update” that will go live later this year. It will target the slowest mobile experience for users and penalize your site by not ranking you as high if you fail to pass their secret tests.
Search query intent will, obviously, still hold a large consideration, but how your website loads on a mobile will soon be very important. The website traffic we’re seeing across the board from Australians ranges between 72 – 89% mobile users.
When is this happening
There’s no need to panic just yet. If you’ve been modifying your website’s SEO or have hired somebody to do your search engine optimisation for you, then you have until July 1st, 2018.
That’s when Google has announced, these changes will take place. As with the last mobile changes, big things can happen very rapidly.
What do I need to do
Now is the time to review your website for its mobile load speeds. Perhaps your site isn’t even mobile optimised yet.
Use popular speed testing tools like pingdom or gtmetrix to determine loading speeds and improvements, but Google recommends you use their page speed insights test. A good caching plugin can help too!
